B-2 Visitor Visa Help for San Francisco Residents & Travelers

Law Offices of Shamieh, Shamieh & Ternieden handles tourist (B-2) visa matters with direct, one-on-one attention. Whether you’re applying for a visitor visa abroad, need to extend your stay, or have questions about your current status, our attorneys work closely with you through every step. We serve clients in San Francisco and nationwide, and our team communicates in five languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, Cantonese, and Arabic.

What a B-2 Tourist Visa Covers

Most international travelers to the United States receive a combined B-1/B-2 visitor visa, which permits entry for business, tourism, or both. The B-2 portion covers pleasure travel: vacations, visits with family and friends, and certain medical treatments. It doesn’t authorize employment or long-term academic study.

U.S. Customs and Border Protection officers determine the exact length of your admission at the port of entry, typically granting up to six months. Your Form I-94, the official record of your arrival and authorized stay, shows the specific date by which you must depart or take action to extend.

Call (415) 300-2144 to speak with a tourist visa lawyer at our San Francisco office about your visitor visa situation.

Qualifying for a B-2 Visa

A successful B-2 application turns on demonstrating nonimmigrant intent: that you plan to visit temporarily and will leave when your authorized stay ends. Consular officers look closely at your ties to your home country, including employment, family, and property, as evidence that you have reason to return.

Financial ability matters too. You must show you can cover your travel and living costs in the U.S. without engaging in unauthorized work. Applicants complete Form DS-160, the online nonimmigrant visa application, and attend a consular interview. Your passport must also remain valid for at least six months beyond your intended period of stay.

Extending Your Stay or Changing Status

If you’re already in the United States on a visitor visa and need more time, you must file Form I-539, Application to Extend/Change Nonimmigrant Status, with USCIS before your I-94 expiration date. USCIS recommends submitting at least 45 days before your authorized stay ends.

Overstaying carries serious consequences. Remaining beyond your authorized period can result in removal from the United States or a multi-year bar on returning. The Admit Until Date on your Form I-94 is the deadline that controls your situation, not the expiration date on your visa stamp.

Why Visitors & Applicants Choose Our San Francisco Firm

Our attorneys bring more than 45 combined years of immigration law experience, including personal experience navigating the U.S. immigration system. Visa petitions are a core part of our practice. That focus means we understand the specific documentation, interview preparation, and status-management issues B-2 applicants face.

Because we operate as a smaller firm, each client works directly with an attorney rather than being handed off to staff. Our team handles consultations in English, Spanish, Portuguese, Cantonese, and Arabic, so a language barrier doesn’t have to stand between you and sound legal advice. For tourist visa questions anywhere in the country, we’re reachable and responsive.

Schedule a Confidential Consultation
